Day 1. Arrive in Clanwilliam by 5.30pm, where you will be met by a Cederberg Heritage Route
Representative, for an overnight stay in a Clanwilliam guesthouse on a DBB basis.
Day 2. After being taken to park your car at the Cedarberg Travel office on a farm outside the town you are transferred to the top of the Pakhuis Pass. From there, you enjoy an escorted hike via Amon se Poort down to the Boskloof Valley. (16km, 7-8 hours, undulating but basically 700m downhill, rating 3B. Most of the path is well made but the last section of about 1km is quite steep and rough. This is quite a strenuous hike.) You stay overnight in the guest cottages in the valley on a DBB basis.
Day 3. This morning you take an escorted hike (12km, 7-8hr) up the spectacular Krakadouw Pass via the Anglo-Boer war block house to Krakadouw Neck and then down into the mission village of Heuningvlei. (Uphill of 900m, then 300m down, rating 3B. Again, this is quite a strenuous hike because of the uphill climb. Most of the path is well made and the steepest section, near the top, is done on a zig zag.) You stay overnight in a guest cottage in Heuningvlei on a DBB basis.
Day 4. This morning you take the Donkey Cart Trail from Heuningvlei to Pakhuis Pass (about 12km, 2hr by donkey cart or 2½-3 hours walk, some 300m uphill and 250m downhill, rating 2A. The track is quite rough and the donkey cart is not a very comfortable vehicle, so be prepared for a bumpy ride.). NOTE ALSO that the donkey cart track is subject to serious erosion during heavy rain storms, which make it unsuitable to take passengers on the carts, so you may have to walk all the way. You are met at the top of Pakhuis Pass at 11am and taken to the Sevilla Trail for a 2-3hr guided rock art walk (rating 1A) and picnic lunch (both optional) before being transported back to Clanwilliam by 3.30pm. Depart for home. (If you elect not to include the rock art walk and lunch you will be back in Clanwilliam by about 12h00.)
More on the Parkhuis Trail
We eventually reached our destination – the Krakadouw cottages – all very tired and ready for an early night after our dinner which was delivered. The accommodation was simple but quite comfortable, although some had to share rather intimate ablution facilities.
